Greeting from the Artistic Director

”The high standard and gifted young prize-winners of the International Paulo Cello Competitions held in 1991, 1996, 2002, 2007 and 2013 have aroused widespread attention among cellists the world over. It is not, however, the sole purpose of a music competition to present prizes, for its mission is also to make music and the instruments on which it is played known to the public at large. Nor should its role in inspiring new generations of musicians be overlooked.

Characteristic of the Paulo Cello Competition is the number of concertos. In 2013, the finalists were able to play with three orchestras, and the competition repertoire includes all the major standard concertos.

Another important factor in the competition is the recital in the first public round. The contestants chose their own repertoire for this, thus allowing them to demonstrate their own preferences, their technical skills and their creativity in planning a concert programme.

The 6th competition will be arranged in 2018. I hope that the atmosphere at the Paulo Cello Competition will encourage our competitors to give their best and provide our audiences with an international cello event of the highest, most stimulating standard.”
